The Teaching and Learning of Geometric Proof: Roles of the Textbook and the Teacher

Summary: Results from a qualitative study about proof in high school geometry will be shared. First, a Common Core geometry textbook was analyzed for its proof-related contents. Then, inservice and preservice secondary mathematics teacher participants were administered a content assessment and interviewed regarding their knowledge, beliefs, and goals for teaching proof.

Mara Markinson

Dr. Mara Markinson is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education at Queens College, City University of New York. Her experiences teaching college geometry to preservice and inservice secondary mathematics teachers inspired her research in this area. Mara taught high school mathematics, chaired a secondary mathematics department, and now serves as a mathematics instructional coach at a New York City secondary school. She earned her PhD at Teachers College, Columbia University in 2021.
